White Meringue Pocket Boxer

Fancy a bit of meringue?

So I was sticking quite well to my break-from-lingerie-sewing resolution. I’ve managed to churn out quite a few articles of clothing over the last month or two, and I was quite proud of myself. But then it struck – halfway through working on a new shirt, sew-jo fled. Vanished. I had zero desire to work on this shirt. Turned out I wasn’t turned off all sewing, however – because I whipped up a dirndl skirt using one metre of polka dot poplin from the Lincraft half-price sale (a dangerous, dangerous place) in about two hours. “Oh, I just needed a break from the drudgery of shirt-making,” I thought. “I will definitely finish this shirt now”. Well, the shirt is still sitting about two-thirds finished on my desk. I said I wasn’t allowed to make anything else until it was finished. But then I remembered it was lace month on the Bra-A-Week Challenge…and that this would be my last week to get a submission together…and I had this really, really pretty lace I wanted to use…

I’ll spare you the rest of my justifications – we all know I’d rather make frosting than cake! – here’s my veritable *meringue* of a lingerie set:

White Meringue Lingerie set

This is yet another Boylston bra, but paired with a new underwear pattern – Merckwaerdigh‘s first downloadable, the pocket boxer! This whole set was made with stashed bits and pieces and patterns I already had, so it feels like a free make (even though this is totally untrue because I did pay for everything at one point or another)! But it was nice putting stashed goodness to use – the lace and strapping was from Rathdowne, the rings and sliders from Arte Crafts, the underarm elastic left over from my Grey’s Fabric Watson kit, and the foam, band elastic, back closure and sheer lining from Booby Traps. And the cotton jersey in the underwear from The Cloth Shop 🙂

White Meringue Boylston Bra

I don’t think I need to state yet again how much I love the Boylston, nor how good the fit is on me – this has been well covered in previous posts 😉 but I did do a little design change this time – the scalloped lace edge along the bottom of the band. I was inspired by Erin’s post last week, and chose to do the method where the band is lengthened slightly to accommodate the lace edge. So it’s a little longer than a normal bra, but not a full longline like my velvet Boylston – and I have to say, I love this look. Construction was very much otherwise as normal, with the exception of zigzagging the edge of the lace on the upper cup, again in order to use the scallops.

One of the nicest things about using a TNT pattern is not being afraid to add in extra details or use really pretty notions. I’d been saving this strap and underarm elastic, and those gorgeous rose-gold rings and sliders, for about six months, waiting for a project that deserved such specialness. I sure am glad I did, because I feel like this bra is one of the most well-put together, best-fitting, comfortable and PRETTY bras I have made to date – to say it’s a new favourite is a bit of an understatement 😛

Speaking of comfortable – this is possibly the most comfortable pair of underwear I have ever worn, let alone sewn! I mean, all of my me-made underwear has been very comfortable, but this – THIS IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF UNDERWEAR. I’ve always liked the idea of boyshort-style underwear, but the style you get in RTW almost always has front and centre back seams and they are always drawn almost magnetically into a wedgie 😦 but this style has no pesky centre seams! It’s actually got six panels (front, back and four side), and then a separate crotch piece. So not only is it an awesome fit and super comfy, the colour-blocking opportunities are practically endless; a feature which is highlighted in the instructions, which include a full page of ideas to inspire. I received this pattern free as a newsletter subscriber, but you can now buy it as a pdf in her Etsy store 🙂

Well, this sent has certainly refreshed my appetite for sewing a bit! And a good de-stress after my first full week of placement too. I’m determined to finish my shirt now (especially now that I’ve realised I’m going to need a lot more clothes for placement!), so look forward to seeing that soon!

Also, while I’m on the topic of bra-making, I was a winner in the category of Best Bra-Making Blogger in Madalynne’s Blogging awards! I’m really honoured, so thanks so much for all of your votes and support – you can see all the results here. And over the weekend, The Fold Line published an article I wrote on lingerie-sewing tips – you can head across and read it here 🙂

Until next time,

Miss Maddy xx

Ooh, those boyshorts might be next on my briefs-to-sew list! I’m hoping to try the Ohhh Lulu high waist ones soon too because they look super pretty and comfortable. The bra is stunning – I love the scalloped lace along the bottom edge! I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to make up a lace bra in the next week as my submission – I’ve also been trying to focus on sewing clothing too recently, but had a very similar experience in that I got “stuck” on sewing a dress. There was nothing going wrong with it, but I just wasn’t particularly inspired despite it being an old favourite pattern. It’s still sat on Maeve (my dressform!) with a sleeve missing and the hem to be finished! Maybe now would be a good time to get onto the lace bra then!!
OH and congratulations on the awards!! I couldn’t believe I was nominated for that one since I’ve only recently started making lingerie and definitely don’t think I’m anywhere NEAR the best (still fumbling around a LOT in my opinion!), so being nominated alongside you was awesome, but you definitely deserve to win 😀

Haha thanks Sian! It’s good to know I’m not the only undisciplined sewer in these parts 😛 but yes I think I can recommend lacy lingerie sewing as an antidote, I’m determined to go home and finish that shirt today! Congrats on your nomination too, though – must be because your makes are so gorgeous 😉

Your new set looks lovely and those panties do look comfy. I have them too, but just made a few new pair of my TNT pattern. I forgot all about the new pattern. I need to print that off so I don’t forget again. I really know what you mean, there’s something about lingerie sewing that is just so incredibly appealing, much more than any other sewing I do. I can feel its pull – even when I have a drawer full of makes. 🙂

Thanks so much Michelle! It’s the one kind of sewing that never fails to appeal – and after all, you can never have too much underwear! 😉

The set looks beautiful! I might have to try sewing my own underwear, nearly all my RTW underwear gives me a wedgie. My favourite model got discontinued a few years ago and I have not found one that is as good as these where. Maybe I should try these..

Oh, I hate it when they stop making my favourite styles! But I can definitely recommend making your own, it’s so fun and satisfying, and you get exactly the style and fit that you want! 🙂

This set is so gorgeous- really the perfect name for it too- so light and sweet 🙂 It looks really soft and comfy too! It makes me dream of spring lol — and MASSIVE congrats on winning Best Bra-Maker with me 🙂 I would say that this is time to celebrate and treat ourselves – but then again I make beautiful lingerie for myself every week of the year! 😛

Thanks Erin! I can’t think of anyone I’d rather share the title with, congrats to you too 🙂 I definitely think such an occasion calls for fancy underwear! My goal this year is to make a set a month – let’s see how well I stick to that… 😉

This set is so lovely!! I love all that white lace!! I have the pattern for the panties too, but haven’t tried it yet. If they are as comfortable as you say, I’m going to make tons of them! 😉 And I have to say that you’re not alone: I’ve had an unfinished shirt on my drawer for over a year beacuse I couldn’t bring myself to sew the last buttonhole in it! I’m the worst seamstress ever! 😛

And congrats for winning the Best Bra Making Blog award!!! I’m so happy that my two favourite bra-makers had won! 😀

Aw thanks Sofia, that’s very sweet! 😀 I think I’ll be making quite a few pairs – I’d love to try edging them with a stretch lace trim instead of elastic, I think it would give a super smooth look under clothes. And at least you’re not alone – judging from the comments, we’ve got a few slack seamstresses around here 😉

Hi MissMaddySews, great make and so aptly named ……knew it wouldn’t be long before you made more lingerie because……you need more to wear with all those lovely new garments you have been making recently! Keep enjoying your sewing adventure!

These are so adorable Maddy! I love the not quite a longline of the bra, I’m going to have to try and make a bra this length. I really need to start branching out from only making Watson Bikinis, this pattern looks like it has great potential. I’m excited to see what else you’ve been making lately.

I also totally get the lack of interest in certain projects. I have to finish quilting my nephews birthday quilt but instead I’ve made a skirt and I’m working on a bra too. I’m glad to know it’s not just me 🙂

Thanks Emma! 🙂 I’m super keen to make about 1 000 000 more of this style of underwear – it’s going to be a TNT in no time I think! Still, gotta get through these pesky clothes first…but at least we can all support each other through our UFOs!

Just gorgeous and they look so comfy! I have never made lingerie before; it is rather intimidating. Love the lace and am sure I could never find anything so beautiful like it again. You never know, this could just inspire me to attempt an undie set.
