Good Things Come in Small Packages

The giveaway is now closed! Thank you to everyone who participated, the winner will be announced in a few days! πŸ™‚

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m not a huge fan of suspense (unless it’s in a Hitchcock movie, in which case, bring it on). So I’m glad that I can finally announce the “little something” I’ve been hinting at for the last couple of weeks! As a thank you for all the support, encouragement and welcome I have received so far, I’m doing a little giveaway! I initially planned this to celebrate reaching 100 followers, but things got away from me a bit, so we’re now going to celebrate the 150 followers milestone instead! πŸ˜€

Given that lingerie-making is something close to my heart, I decided that I’d put together some bra-making supplies to give away! One of the most common questions I see relating to the topic is: where do I find supplies? So here I’ll list the components of the kit I’ve put together and where they came from…and one lucky person will get these supplies sent to them!

Bra Kit

Although perhaps one of the easiest supplies to get hold of, it seems to be the cause of the most confusion: material for the bra. When starting out, choosing the “right” fabric can seem very daunting, especially when so many new words are being thrown around (tricot, duoplex, powernet). But the truth is, so long as you work within the requirements of your pattern and your own needs (e.g. comfort, support), you can use pretty much whatever you like if you go about it the right way! Stretch lace is one of my favourite options: it’s relatively easy to work with (doesn’t fray, isn’t slippery); it’s suitable for most patterns (can be used unlined in stretch patterns, or underlined for non-stretch); and it gives a really pretty, professional looking result – lace is such a popular choice in RTW!

Stretch lace

One fabric alone does not a bra make (well, it can, but usually you need a couple of types). Most bra patterns will require at least some parts of non-stretch; usually the bridge, but often the whole cradle and cups as well. In order to stabilise your fashion fabric (especially a stretch fabric), sheer denier lining is my preference. Light weight, breathable and sheer, it will make any fabric (almost) suitable for bra-making…whilst still keeping things light ‘n’ lacy (if that’s how you like things [that is how I like things]).

What about the stretchy parts of the bra though? Obviously, the back of the bra needs to stretch, so we can’t have non-stretch fabrics there – or what if you have a stretch fabric, but it’s too flimsy? This is where our powermesh/net comes in. This fantastically stretchy fabric comes in a variety of weights, but a mid-weight powernet usually has a good level of firm stretch and recovery for a bra. Or you can do what I do, and buy cheaper light-weight powernet and double it up for the band (still cheaper than a single layer of the good stuff!). It can also be used to underline a stretchy fashion fabric which isn’t firm enough or lacks the recovery required to make it as a bra.

Sheer denier lining Powermesh

There are three types of elastic in your garden-variety bra: band elastic, underarm/neckline elastic, and strap elastic. What they all have in common vis-a-vis requirements is a soft plush side, which rests against your skin, and good recovery. Band elastic is generally the widest of the three, as it’s the most important in terms of support. Underarm elastic can be a little narrower, as its main function is to keep the bra snug and flush against the skin. The width of strap elastic is generally a matter of personal preference; I never use narrower than 10mm (3/8″), and the greater the width, the more comfortable and supportive they will be.

Elastics

These are fairly straight forward – this hardware allows you to make your straps adjustable, like RTW. I usually find it easiest to get my strap elastic first, and then rings and sliders in the correct width. They come in a variety of colours and materials; I recommend metal or plated metal over pure plastic, as it’s not as strong (and looks a little cheap, in my opinion). You can often get coloured ones, if you like to match – I find it easiest to keep a few pairs in metallic colours on hand, as they match everything (and look super fancy).

Hook and eye closure and rings and sliders

Another very standard part of bra hardware. These you can buy a couple of ways: pre-cut, or a length of continuous hook and eye tape. they both have advantages and disadvantages (tape can be cut to whatever length you like, pre-cut reduces the need to finish the edges). Pre-cut is usually my preference, as I like using lots of different colours and avoiding the hassle of cutting and finishing myself.

Then, of course, you have underwires and wire casing, which I have not included in this kit. Underwires are obviously best sourced yourself, as you’ll need them in your size; casing – well to be honest, it’s because I forgot to order it, but it IS very readily available on eBay and Etsy – but also because I thought this laceΒ would be very well suited to a Watson soft bra, which was the first bra I made and a great pattern, particularly for beginners. Of course it is the choice of the lucky winner, whoever they may be, what they make – and I can’t wait to see what they come up with πŸ™‚ (and they should also, of course, feel free to mix and match withΒ whatever other materials they may like!) And as a general disclaimer, it is beyond the scope of my abilities (and budget) to put together a kit which will work for every pattern and size – so some creativity (not included) may be required! Either way, you’ll have a good starting point andΒ a good idea of what materials to look for with what’s here πŸ™‚

So, how does one enter? Very simple! Leave a comment below, either explaining why you like or would like to sew lingerie, or what you’d make with this kit, or both (the winner will be selected via random number generator). No follows or likes are required (although it would be nice – and following this blog on WordPressΒ or Bloglovin or liking on Facebook will be the best way to find out who the winner is!) The competition is open from when this post is published, and closes WednesdayΒ 8th September, 11:59 PM Melbourne timeΒ (GMT+10). It is open internationally πŸ™‚ As a general disclaimer, everything in this kit was purchased with my own funds, and there’s no affiliation to any of the vendors I’ve sourced from.

If you’re looking for more information or suppliers for bra-making and lingerie sewing, you can also check out my Resources page! It has a list of all the suppliers I’ve bought from, plus a few more, and some helpful links and suggestions for more info.

Well, get entering everyone, and spread the word! Best of luck and until next time,

Miss Maddy x

I’m just starting to learn to make my own bras. I’ve been watching Beverly Johnson’s Craftsy class on the subject, and I’m also enrolled in a local class being taught in September by Anne Sinclair. Learning all the bra-making supply vendors listed in the blog post is great. I love all the laces and girly stuff.

I have been wanting to sew bea for years but living in the Philippines really struggle with finding suitable materials. I have a couple of kits and keep samples in my bag to show staff in stores what I am looking for. Would love some additional materials as I haven’t trued a lace bra yet!

I am new to sewing bras. It has now become a quest to make my first bra. I have ordered some supplies, awaiting their arrival. The laces are so beautiful and I would like to be able to make my matching set. I’m in a F Cup and kinda of hard to get that just right fit. Hope I’m the winner.

Just had a go at my first bra from scraps and old findings! I agree for a beginner a set is sooo much easier than trying to source all you need separately – guess how I know….

What a lovely offer, I am interested in sewing a bra with the kit. I began sewing bras when as a petite plus size wearing a 40H I could find no bras that did not torture me. After several exasperating attempts with Elan patterns, I finally began creating my own from paper surgical tape molds using Lee Ann Burgess’ “Making Beautiful Bras” as a guide. After weight loss brought me down to a a 34I or 36G, I can find some RTW, but I have been long-since “seduced” by the bra-making, as I love the process of creativity and problem-solving to make something both lovely and comfortable and supportive. I am so thrilled about the internet “bloom” of interest and resources for bra-making! (Although I do wish more were located near the DC area. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and gorgeous creations with the rest of us!

I’ve been researching lingerie sewing for about a week, trying to work up the courage to take the plunge and get the materials I need. I can’t seem to decide on anything though! When there’s too much to choose from, it becomes very difficult… Sure would be nice to have those choices made, and get a kickstart on my material gathering πŸ˜‰

I love this idea of combining items from various sources, such a nice way for a lucky person (hopefully me) to try these out. How thoughtful of you to offer this, thank you. I have made two bras so far and look forward to many more because I just can not get a good fit in rtw. Your blog is delightful btw and I look forward to reading more.

I sew bras and undies because my size can’t be found easily and when I do find one, the colors are utilitarian and it still doesn’t fit well. I’m also particular about cheek coverage on underoos…most don’t give enough!

Hi! I recently discovered your blog and I just love reading it. It’s full of good advices for lingerie making and this is my passion right now. I like to say that nobody needs to suffer to be beautiful, and I started making lingerie for myself because it was a pain to find bras that fitted me. I’m very excited about your giveaway and maybe I would try the Watson bra for the first time? I’ve been looking at it for a while πŸ™‚ thank you very much and I’m crossing my fingers to be the lucky one! Xoxox

I have been sewing bra for a couple of years now. I am just venturing out trying different patterns and fabrics. I would love to have this kit to make a nursing bra for my daughter. The nursing bra is the new pattern I am trying to get the fit accurate for her. So, far she says the bras are definitely prettier than RTW.

I am about to try sewing my own bra. I just spent $400 Canadian on two bras, ‘professionally’ fit from a bra shop, Bratopia, which advertises their fitting expertise; these are without a doubt the worst fitting bras I have ever worn! But they have motivated me to get busy and learn to sew my own! Now to figure out this strange new world….. Your post was quite helpful, as it is details all the various bits and pieces which currently have me stymied…. Thanks for helping sort through my confusion!

I’ve wanted to make lingerie for a long time, but haven’t know where to start or what to buy. This kit would be a great help! As a petite girl with boobs, I’ve always had trouble finding comfortable, well-fitting bras and as a sewer, I’d like to make my own. As well, they’d be a great addition to my corsets (I love matching undergarments). And I would probably look for matching supplies to make a corset to go with whatever I’d make from this kit!

Thank you for such a great giveaway!

I would love to get into bra making! I love new challenges when i’m sewing and I feel like making lingerie would be an awesome goal to set myself. I’m only 15 years old, so a lot of people don’t think I am capable of doing this kind of more technical sewing – but I reckon i’m up to it!
Unfortunately I live in little old New Zealand which means the supplies seem near impossible to access, but once I’ve mastered the basics, I plan on making a bandeau-bra style bodiced dress, that actually has a proper inbuilt bra. I also want to make a Lululemon-esque strappy sports bra and of course the compulsory Watsons and Boylstons! Aftter reading lots of books on fast fashion and it’s impacts my goal is to create an entirely self-made wardrobe that doesn’t look it, so I better get onto the undies too! πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the opportunity! I love love love that color combination! I’m really itching to start making my own bras/underwear once I’ve finished nursing. I’m a 30D in RTW and I’m sick of having to spend $60+ on a single bra that I’m not necessarily in love with. I had started dipping my toes in the bra making water a little over a year ago, but then found out I was pregnant and have had to put everything on hold until my size quits fluctuating.
